Giovanni Antonio Canal - Finest Landscape Painter

Canaletto - October 28, 1697 - April 19, 1768

Known better as Canaletto, Giovanni Antonio Canal was considered to be the finest landscape painter of his time. HIs most celebrated and prominent works are the detailed scenery paintings in Venice.

Helping out his father Canaletto eventually started designing stage sets for operas of Vivaldi. He found a niche market in Venice for selling his paintings, to English tourists. His art works were so true to life and realistic, he could make the sun shine in his paintings.

Moving to London in the mid 1700's due to the tourist recession in Venice, he started producing scenery and images of London landscape during the great change. Also portraying the construction of the Westminster Bridge.
